Broome and the Kimberley

The Kimberley region

The Kimberley region in Western Australia is a truly unique wilderness adventure that captures the imagination. Covering nearly 423,000 square kilometres, this ancient region has fewer people per square kilometre than almost any other place on Earth.

Hidden in the heart of the Kimberley region are vast wildlife sanctuaries, spectacular gorges and thundering waterfalls. And on its coast lie some of the world's most beautiful beaches, untouched coral atolls and rugged islands with an amazing variety of marine life.

Broome

One of Australia's most popular holiday destinations, Broome, in Western Australia, offers a relaxing break by the world-famous Cable Beach. But for those seeking action and adventure, Broome is also the southern gateway to the magnificent wilderness region of the Kimberley.

Beautiful Cable Beach

Ranked among the world's best beaches, the pristine sands of Cable Beach stretch for 22 kilometres. The beach got its name from the telegraph cable laid between Broome and Java in 1889. These days it's famous for warm turquoise waters and soft white sand, making it a popular spot for swimming, relaxing in the sun, strolling at sunset, camel treks and pearl lugger sailing tours.

Cultural Chinatown

Broome, in Western Australia, has one of the most diverse populations, creating an exotic blend of culture and cuisine. In Broome's Chinatown, you'll get to experience it first-hand. Once a bustling hub of pearl sheds, billiard saloons, entertainment houses, opium dens and brothels, Chinatown is now home to fine pearl showrooms and retail outlets. Drop into a sidewalk cafe or restaurant and treat yourself to a taste of Chinatown's exotic east-meets-west cuisine.

Broome historic sites

Founded in the late 1880s as a pearling port, the town of Broome still produces some of the world's finest pearls. See just how dangerous diving was in the early days by taking a look at the Japanese Cemetery, the final resting place for over 900 pearl divers who lost their lives at sea. View the remains of the Dutch Flying Boats, the Catalinas, at the site where they were bombed during World War II.
